Crusaders Get Back To Back Home Wins Over The Weekend

The Sherwood Park Crusaders had a successful two game weekend home stand.

On Friday the Crusaders welcomed Chilliwack, beating the Chiefs 8-5 while shutting out the Okotoks Oilers 6-0 on Saturday.

Coming into the Friday Matchup the Crusaders were looking for a win as they were riding a four game losing streak heading into the game. The Crusaders however would strike first just two minutes into the game as Bode Sampair would score on the powerplay for his seventh of the season to put the Cru up early, 1-0. Just over two minutes after the opening goal, newest-Crusaders Brant Romaniuk would score his second as a Guy in Green to double the Crusaders lead to 2-0. Sherwood Park was not done there scoring before the ten minute mark as Quincy Supprien would get his twelfth of the season to give the Cru’ a commanding 3-0 lead six minutes into the game. The Chiefs would get some success of their own when Boris Borin would get one past netminder Filip Vavro to put the game at 3-1 just over the halfway marker of the first. Erik Kald was quick to re-gain the Cru’s three goal lead as he would send an ice burner towards the net beating Chief’s goalie David Di Girolamo, to once again put Sherwood up by three, 4-1. Chilliwack would end up making it a two goal game last in the first when defenseman Cole Hutchinson would send one on net that would take a couple lucky bounces before finding theĀ  back of the net to make it a 4-2 game heading into the second.

The Crusaders wasted no time getting back to their scoring ways as the Captain Stevie Grumley would score his team-leading 15th of the season just 20 second into the middle frame to make it 5-2 Crusaders. Quincy Supprien just nine seconds later would get his second of the game to put the Crusaders up 6-2 all before the one minute mark of the second period. The Chiefs would get back on the board just two minutes later when Chiefs Captain Nico Grabas would bury a pass from Jack Plandowski to give some life to the Chiefs and make it a 6-3 hockey game. As everyone thought the period was over, Tommy Coccaro would scoop up the puck with just thirty seconds left and dance around 6’6 Chiefs defender Jaden Veney to score what might be the BCHL goal of the year, and to put the Cru’ back up by four, 7-3.

Unlike the first two period the Chiefs would actually get the first goal of the period when just six minutes into the final frame the Captain Nico Grabas would score his second of the game to make it a 7-4 game. Chilliwack would actually get back to back goals ten minutes later when Jaden Veney would score his first as a Chief to make it a two goal game with just four minutes remaining. However in the dying second of the game Quincy Supprien would bury the loose puck in the crease, securing the Crusaders the 8-5 win and also giving the Ropentigny, Quebec native his first career BCHL hat-trick.

The Crusaders had a ton of momentum coming into their Saturday game against the Oilers and they showed it, as the boy from Ottawa, Kent Moors would score late in the period to put the Crusaders up 1-0 after the opening 20.

Kent Moors would carry the momentum into the middle frame as he would score his second of the game six minutes into the second to put the Crusaders up 2-0. Danick St. Pierre would hop in on the action as he would bury a loose puck in the crease just thirty second later to give Sherwood a commanding 3-0 lead. Nearing the ten minute mark of the middle period, Joseph “scare face” Sinclair would put one home on the powerplay to give the Bowling Greens commit his 15th on the season and giving the Cru’ the 4-0 lead.

The Crusaders were not done after just two periods, with five minutes left in the game Jude Bray would get in on the fun as he was able to get his fifth goal of the season on the man-advantage, to make the game 5-0. And in the late stages of the game Max Ly was able to get on the scoresheet as he would give the Crusaders the 6-0 win, while also giving netminder Filip Vavro his first career junior shut-out in the process.

The Crusaders get to take the week off as it is the All-star Break in the BCHL. Sherwood has a total of six players representing the Guys in Green at the break. Braden O’Keefe and Quincy Supprien are both playing for the Interior Roster team in the College Prospects game.

Furthermore Erik Kald and Stevie Grumley both have a spot on team World in the all star game while Jude Bray and Joseph Sinclair are both representing Canada in the Canada vs. World game.
